Battle Of The Black Country 2009

On Thursday 16th April 2009, the 'Battle of the Black Country Showcase 2009', will provide the regions finest youth and community sports event. The Easter showcase will include a four team Under 18's basketball tournament, the SLAM! Mini Basketball League All-Stars Game and the SLAM! Mentors vs. Mentees Game.

The event will be supported by Cheerleading teams, Street Dancers and a number of local youth performances. The Battle Of The Black Country Showcase 2009 will seek to engage a diverse range of talented young people (aged 8 - 18 years old) and community residents in a safe/family environment.

By working with a variety of local/regional private, public and third sector agencies, the showcase will promote sports participation, healthy lifestyles, positive community interaction and cohesion. Battle Of The Black Country 2009, seeks to address local issues of anti-social behaviour, postcoding, gangs and gun/weapon culture within the city/region.

As part of Team (Wolverhampton) SLAM!'s club development programme, the Battle Of The Black Country 2009 will profile the prominent basketball talents within the city and the surrounding region.

Team SLAM! will select twelve local young people from our four SLAM! Junior Development Clubs (in All Saints, Grove Primary; Blakenhall, The Royal School; Bushbury/Low Hill, St Chad's Sports College; Goldthorn, Colton Hills School and Whitmore Reans, Valley Park Campus) to represent Wolverhampton against teams from Dudley, Sandwell/Birmingham and Walsall.

The Battle Of The Black Country Showcase will also include the SLAM! Mini Basketball League All-Star Game. The All-Star Game will mark the completion of the first ever, SLAM! Mini Basketball League. The eight-week citywide grassroots basketball development programme provided a central venue league for children in school years 5,6 and 7 at the Grove Primary School, Caledonia Road, All Saints. annual Mini Basketball League.

To conclude the festivities, the SLAM! Mentors vs. SLAM! Mentees Game will provide an overload of basketball entertainment, as the SLAM! Staff do battle with the city's up and coming talent. A number of Professional Players and Coaches will go head to head with SLAM! Select Team in a guaranteed highlight reel showcase to excite the crowd.
